Jeffrey Epstein was a financier who maintained relationships with public figures and institutions. In 2007–2008, he entered a state-level plea agreement in Florida involving charges related to solicitation of a minor.
In July 2019, Epstein was indicted in the Southern District of New York (SDNY) on federal sex trafficking charges. He died in federal custody in August 2019 while awaiting trial.
Ghislaine Maxwell, a longtime associate of Epstein, was charged federally in 2020. In December 2021, she was convicted in the Southern District of New York on sex trafficking-related charges. She was later sentenced to federal prison. Appeals proceedings followed.
